Hammerhead: Mad’s Not Bad
By Kelly Oriard & Callie Christensen
Illustrated by Brooke Winka
Mad’s Not Bad introduces children to the idea that anger itself isn’t a bad feeling. Through Hammerhead’s story, young readers learn that difficult moments can sometimes cause us to lose our temper, but we can pause, recognize what we’re feeling, and find healthier ways to respond. The book uses conflict as an opportunity to build emotional awareness and teach children that all feelings are valid, even when certain behaviors need to be addressed.
Its simple, reassuring approach also gives caregivers an opportunity to talk with children about what happens after a conflict, including calming down, communicating, problem-solving, and repairing relationships.
