The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm
By LeVar Burton & Susan Schaefer Bernardo
Illustrated by Courtenay Fletcher
The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm begins with Mica Mouse, who is frightened by a storm after having previously lost her home to a hurricane. To comfort her, her father tells her the story of a little rhinoceros who experiences a devastating storm of his own. When Rhino tries to swallow his feelings instead of expressing them, the storm continues to rage inside him.
As Rhino meets supportive friends along his journey, he learns that healing can come through connection, love, asking for help, and allowing himself to feel and express difficult emotions. The story offers children a reassuring way to explore what can happen after a frightening or traumatic experience while reinforcing that they do not have to navigate those feelings alone.
